The Lone Wolf
This song full of modulations came virtually out of nowhere: I was testing a software piano plugin and before I knew it, I had composed most of this song. As you all know, great musicians (and songs in the Eurovision song contest) live from modulations, so I decided I'd put in a few to add some spice to this song. If I remember right there should be three our four modulations, one in the end and the rest hidden somewhere along the way...
The lyrics are mostly about choosing your path in life. Sometimes life kicks you in the head, you feel wounded, lost and all alone, but you still go on - I guess you don't really have a choice. You can't be afraid of getting hurt, because that's a part of life. No-one knows what life has in store for you, but you have to take chances in order to achieve something. On the other hand, it's important that you learn from the mistakes you've made so that you don't keep banging your head against the wall. If you get the sensation that you've been in this situation before, you might be travelling a circle. In a way this song is also about leaving the past behind and looking forward to the future without fear and with hope.
This song isn't very typical of me. It's more of an experimental semi-ballad to a power metal band. The guitar rhythms in the B- & C-parts in the middle of the verses were a nice addition and the modulations still put a smile on my face... And there's a twisted guitar solo too! ;) It was nice doing something completely different for a while, and I got to learn a whole bunch of new stuff. I'd say I'm quite satisfied with the outcome, although it didn't not quite become the number one hit you should always aim for...
